Editor's Letter: Welcome to Balance Garden

Dearest Readers,

It’s a pleasure to welcome you to Balance Garden. Today is our launch day and it feels exciting to be out in the world at last, especially at this time of new beginnings and the promise of Spring just around the corner.

Many of you will have been celebrating the long weekend these past couple of days; I hope you’re enjoyed it wherever you are/were. I’m writing to you from a beautiful organic farm in Dorset where I’ve spent the weekend delighting in organic food cooked with love, and breathing the sweet countryside air. It’s a welcome break from London, the city I currently call home, waking up to the sound of the birds singing and the cockerels announcing the morning, but I’m looking forward to returning to the city and bringing some of the peace, clarity and tranquility I find in nature back with me to the Balance Garden HQ and ultimately to you.

As Balance Garden’s editor and co-founder you’ll be hearing from me, Jasmine, at least once a month as I’ll be giving you a low down of what to expect in each month’s resources and events and adding a few of my own practices and articles to our ever growing library.

I should start by filling you in a bit about what this community is all about...

Balance Garden was originally dreamed up by friends and colleagues who kept arriving at the same juncture in our professional and personal conversations: As a group of bodyworkers, coaches, and wellbeing facilitators we have seen an increasing number of burnt out, fed up, stressed out people walking through the doors of our studios and classes and an ever growing need from the people we serve (as teachers, facilitators, coaches, therapists) for more human connection, for rest, for more practices that help to balance the very real demands of the world we live in.

The technological advancements made in the last fifteen years or so have made it easier than ever to stay in constant communication with the world, to work from anywhere (and at any time), to have information available to us at the tap-tap-click of our fingertips, and ultimately to be switched on and plugged in pretty much 24/7. We are bombarded by advertising everywhere we look- it’s estimated that we see up to 3500 advertisements a day most of them promoting heavily edited images that don’t help to make us feel better about ourselves or the world around us. And we live in a culture that encourages us to do more, buy more, and that ultimately sends us the message that we do not have enough; that we are not enough.

Don’t get us wrong; this isn’t some anti modernity rant (this is a website after all). We applaud the freedom and possibilities that technology can offer. We celebrate the increased ease of staying in touch with friends and loved ones across multiple time zones, the world is exciting and the possibilities seem endless.

But, and there is a big but, along with the multitude of gifts and delights that these developments bring we have to recognise that somewhere along the way, the balance has been lost. As a society we are chronically busy, there is an epidemic of stress and anxiety, we don’t sleep enough, we are over medicated,  we put our creative projects to the bottom of the priority pile, the list goes on. And why? Because on some level we all feel that there is too much to do, too much to achieve, too much to tick off the list, and that if we take time out for ourselves, then somehow we will fall behind, we will become irrelevant.

And so…in an aim to help redress that balance, we created this site, for YOU! Here at Balance Garden we think, actually we know, that you can’t continue to give, and thrive, and achieve your dreams if your personal pot is empty. In order to continue to live a fulfilled and happy life, one that isn’t hurtling inevitably towards burnout, you need to pause and take stock. You need to slow down, and breathe deeper, you need to take time to nourish your self- mind, body and soul.

Our mission is to provide you with an antidote to the feeling that you have to constantly achieve. We celebrate the quiet moments, the spaces in between, and the value of personal enquiry. We offer free resources, tools, and practices that encourage you to slow down and take care; Recipes to nourish you, yoga routines to replenish you, meditation techniques to calm you, coaching articles to help you make the choices that really serve you. Alongside this, we curate events and retreats to help you explore all of the above under the guidance of experienced facilitators who want to help you find balance in your own lives and the confidence to just be, even for a short while, in this over-stimulated and demanding world.

We will be posting one article a day, from a truly incredible pool of over thirty five contributors, with easy to implement advice and techniques that will help you navigate your way to a life that feels spacious, satisfying, and connected in all the right ways. We’ll also be compiling blog posts and new events into a convenient weekly newsletter, (which you can sign up for in the side bar there if you want balance straight to your inbox), where you can access the information at the times that suit you, rather than feeling like you need to digest it all as it’s posted.

We are really proud of what we have created, and so grateful to the contributors who want to share their knowledge with you. We really hope you enjoy what they have to offer.

That’s probably enough from me for now. I’ll also be sharing a nourishing yin yoga sequence every month that you can do from the comfort of your own home, so be sure to check that out next week.

Until next time you hear from me enjoy the rest of the month’s articles, and be in touch, we’d love to hear from you to know if there is anything in particular you would like us to cover.
